Let’s talk a little about what makes your roof a roof. 

For starters, your roof is framed with wood. If done on-site, the framing is called “stick-built.” If constructed off-site and brought to the property, the framing is called a “truss.” Framing is pre-existing to either a roof repair or replacement. This is the original structure of your home, which the framing crew erected per the building plans. This is not part of the roofing system that would normally be changed or altered during a re-roof or repair. However, in some instances of insurance claims, such as an extreme tree impact, tornado damage or lightning strike, this structure would need to be rebuilt, repaired or reinforced.

So with the roof framed, the next element that makes up your roof is the decking or sheathing. Decking is the wood (plywood, 1”X6”, or OSB) upon which every other element of your roof lays. The decking gives the full shape to your roof and provides a surface for underlayment, shingles, and all other roof materials to attach to. Decking is absolutely crucial. When Ridgepoint Roofing is inspecting and estimating a roof replacement or repair, this decking is usually hidden from the estimator upon original inspection. However, as the roofers remove all the materials from on top of the decking, problems with that wood may be found. We must replace any decking that has been damaged from water, has deaminated or is not to code (usually due to thickness or spacing issues), as this is a critical foundation for your roof. 

After the decking has been installed, underlayment is rolled out on top of the surface of the roof. There are a few different materials that underlayments may be made of. We at Ridgepoint typically use a synthetic underlayment. This underlayment is also important for your roof, as it acts as a protection from certain types of weather damage.
